Perioperative Instructions for Office-Based Surgery

Please carefully review and follow these instructions to ensure a safe and smooth recovery.

  1. Preoperative Hygiene:
    • Take a shower the night before and again on the morning of your surgery.
    • Do not apply lotion, cream, or oil after showering.

  2. Sleep and Rest:
    • Get a full night of restful sleep before your procedure.

  3. Preoperative Diet Instructions:
    • You may have a light snack (such as toast and juice) or a light meal on the morning of surgery if instructed.
    • Stop eating or drinking anything except water at least 2 hours before your scheduled surgery time.
    • Water is allowed up to 2 hours before surgery.

  4. What Is Allowed During the Procedure (If You Are Awake):
    • If your procedure is performed under local anesthesia without IV sedation, and you are awake and alert, you may be allowed to sip small amounts of water or juice, or have light snacks such as crackers or a protein bar, as permitted by your surgeon.
    • This helps maintain comfort and energy during longer procedures.
    • Always confirm with Dr. Yuan before consuming anything during your procedure.

  5. Protecting Your Mattress or Furniture:
    • Prepare a plastic shower curtain or waterproof sheet to protect your bed or recliner from fluid leakage after surgery.

  6. Transportation and Assistance:
    • Arrange for a responsible adult (family member or friend) to drive you home after surgery.
    • A companion should stay with you overnight after your procedure.

  7. Postoperative Ambulation:
    • You should begin light walking indoors the same evening or the next day after surgery.
Have someone accompany you when walking until you are fully alert and steady on your feet. This helps prevent falls and promotes circulation.

  8. Common Medications and Their Uses:
Aleve (Naproxen) – 500 mg by mouth, twice daily: for pain and inflammation
Gabapentin (Neurontin) – 600 mg by mouth, three times daily: for nerve-related pain
Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine) – 10 mg by mouth, three times daily: muscle relaxant
Zofran (Ondansetron) – 8 mg by mouth, up to twice daily as needed: for nausea
Keflex (Cephalexin) – 500 mg by mouth, three times daily: antibiotic to prevent infection
Percocet (Oxycodone/Acetaminophen) – for more severe pain after procedures such as tummy tuck or breast augmentation (use only as prescribed)

  9. Diet After Surgery:
    • Start with light foods such as Jell-O, soup, or mashed potatoes.
    • Drink plenty of fluids (water, Gatorade, apple juice, cranberry juice).
    • Resume your regular diet the following day as tolerated.
