Laser liposuction is a body contouring technique that uses laser energy to assist with fat removal and, in select cases, support mild skin tightening. It is most commonly used for small, localized areas where precision is important, such as the chin, arms, abdomen, or flanks.
At Dr. Yuan Cosmetic Surgery, laser liposuction is offered as one of several liposuction techniques and is recommended only when it is appropriate for a patient’s anatomy, goals, and skin quality.

Laser liposuction—also referred to as laser-assisted liposuction—uses a thin fiber-optic probe to deliver controlled laser energy into fatty tissue. This energy helps loosen fat cells before removal through gentle suction.
The laser energy may also stimulate limited collagen contraction, which can be helpful for patients with mild skin laxity, but it does not replace surgical skin excision when excess skin is significant.
Laser liposuction is a variation of traditional liposuction, not a non-surgical treatment.
Laser liposuction and traditional liposuction both remove fat using a cannula and suction. The difference lies in how the fat is prepared before removal.
Laser liposuction:
• Uses laser energy to help liquefy fat
• May support mild skin tightening
• Best suited for small or moderately sized areas
Traditional liposuction:
• Removes fat mechanically
• Allows higher-volume fat removal
• Preferred for larger areas and comprehensive contouring
During consultation, the appropriate technique is selected based on safety, effectiveness, and desired results.
Laser liposuction may be used for:
• Chin and jawline
• Upper arms
• Abdomen
• Flanks
• Inner thighs
• Back or bra-line area
Not all areas or patients are good candidates for laser-assisted techniques.
Laser liposuction may be appropriate for patients who:
• Are near their ideal body weight
• Have small, localized fat deposits
• Have mild skin laxity
• Are in good overall health
• Prefer targeted contouring rather than large-volume fat removal
Patients with significant skin laxity or larger fat deposits often achieve better results with traditional liposuction or combined procedures.
Recovery following laser liposuction is similar to other liposuction techniques and typically includes:
• Mild to moderate swelling and bruising
• Compression garment use
• Return to light activity within several days
• Gradual improvement over several weeks
Final contour refinement continues as swelling resolves.
Laser liposuction is considered safe when performed by an experienced surgeon using appropriate patient selection. As with any surgical procedure, potential risks include swelling, bruising, contour irregularities, and temporary numbness.
All risks, alternatives, and expectations are reviewed during consultation.
